What Is Hemangiosarcoma?

Hemangiosarcoma is a highly aggressive cancer that arises from the cells lining blood vessels. It most often develops in the spleen, heart, or liver, and less commonly in the skin. Because these tumors are filled with blood and fragile, they can rupture without warning, causing sudden internal bleeding. Hemangiosarcoma is most common in middle-aged and senior dogs, particularly German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Labrador Retrievers, though it can also affect cats. It is one of several forms of cancer in pets that families in our area face.

Signs of Hemangiosarcoma

  • Sudden weakness or collapse
  • Pale gums or tongue
  • A swollen or distended abdomen
  • Rapid or labored breathing
  • Lethargy and loss of appetite
  • Episodes of weakness that seem to improve, then return

Many dogs show no signs until a tumor bleeds. Small bleeds may cause brief episodes of weakness that resolve as the body reabsorbs the blood, while a large rupture can become life-threatening within hours.

Treatment and Prognosis

Treatment may include surgical removal of the spleen and chemotherapy, which can extend life for some pets. Unfortunately, hemangiosarcoma has often spread by the time it is diagnosed, and the prognosis is guarded. The Cornell University Hospital for Animals and other veterinary oncology centers note that many dogs live weeks to a few months after diagnosis, even with treatment. Your veterinarian can help you weigh the options that are right for your pet.

Planning Ahead for a Peaceful Goodbye

Because a rupture can happen suddenly, many families choose to plan a peaceful goodbye after diagnosis rather than risk an emergency. Having a plan in place, including knowing who to call, can bring peace of mind. If your pet experiences pale gums, collapse, or labored breathing, contact your veterinarian or emergency hospital immediately. When you and your family feel ready, Dr. Buchanan can help your pet pass calmly at home, without the stress of an emergency room.

Hemangiosarcoma FAQs

What causes hemangiosarcoma in dogs?

The exact cause is not fully understood, but genetics play a role, and certain breeds such as German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Labrador Retrievers are at higher risk. Sun exposure may contribute to the skin form of the disease.

Is hemangiosarcoma painful?

Tumors can cause discomfort, and internal bleeding can lead to weakness, pain, and distress. Many pets appear normal between bleeding episodes, which is why planning ahead is so important.

How quickly does hemangiosarcoma progress?

Hemangiosarcoma is often fast-moving. Without treatment, many dogs live only days to weeks after diagnosis. With surgery and chemotherapy, some dogs gain additional months.

What should I do if my dog collapses or has pale gums?

These are signs of possible internal bleeding. Contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency hospital right away.

Can I schedule in-home euthanasia before an emergency happens?

Yes. Many families choose a planned, peaceful goodbye after a diagnosis to spare their pet a frightening emergency. Call (203) 767-0736 to discuss timing.

Can hemangiosarcoma affect cats?

Yes, though it is less common in cats than in dogs. It can affect the spleen, liver, heart, or skin.

Do you offer cremation after euthanasia?

Yes. We coordinate group or private cremation through our partner Resting Rainbow, along with urns and memorial keepsakes.
