What is in-home pet euthanasia?
In-home pet euthanasia is a veterinary service in which a licensed veterinarian comes to your home to help your pet pass peacefully. Instead of a stressful car ride and a clinic exam room, your dog or cat can say goodbye in a familiar place, surrounded by the people and comforts they love most.
What areas does Avalon Vet Services serve?
We serve Manatee, Sarasota & Southwest Florida, including parts of Hillsborough, Polk, Hardee, DeSoto, Charlotte & Lee Counties. Communities we regularly visit include Bradenton, Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Parrish, Palmetto, and Myakka City. Call us to confirm availability for your address.
How do I know when it’s time to say goodbye?
There is rarely one perfect moment, but signs such as ongoing pain, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, inability to stand or move comfortably, incontinence, and withdrawal from family can indicate that quality of life is declining. Dr. Buchanan offers quality-of-life consultations to help you make this decision with clarity and support.
Will my pet feel any pain?
No. Your pet first receives a sedative that gently relaxes them into a deep, restful sleep. Only once they are fully comfortable and unaware is the final medication given. The goal is a passing that is free of fear, stress, and pain.
Can my family and other pets be present?
Yes. Family members, including children, are welcome to be present, and many families choose to have other household pets nearby. Dr. Buchanan can offer guidance on how to include children and how other pets may respond.
Can my pet have treats during the visit?
Absolutely. Your pet can enjoy favorite treats, gentle petting, and loving attention throughout the entire visit. Many families plan a favorite meal or snack as part of their goodbye.
Where in my home can the euthanasia take place?
Wherever your pet is most comfortable, whether that is their bed, the couch, a sunny spot on the lanai, or a favorite corner of the yard. We will work with you to create a calm, peaceful setting.
How long does an in-home euthanasia appointment take?
Our visits are never rushed. Most appointments allow time to talk, answer questions, complete paperwork, sedate your pet, and give your family time to say goodbye before and after the passing.
How much does in-home euthanasia cost?
The cost for in-home euthanasia for cats and dogs is typically between $450 and $500. Cremation and memorial keepsakes may be additional. If you are facing financial hardship, please ask us about Sugar’s Gift, a nonprofit that helps families access in-home end-of-life care.
What happens to my pet’s body afterward?
We can arrange respectful transportation and aftercare for your pet. Through our partnership with Resting Rainbow, families can choose group or private cremation. You may also choose home burial where local regulations allow.
What is the difference between private and group cremation?
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you. With group cremation, several pets are cremated together and ashes are not returned. Learn more on our pet cremation services page.
Do you offer paw prints or other keepsakes?
Yes. We offer ink or clay paw print keepsakes, and a variety of urns and memorial products are available through our cremation partner to help you honor your pet’s memory.
How soon can I schedule an appointment?
We are available from 8:00am to 7:00pm, seven days a week. Please call (203) 767-0736 or complete our appointment request form, and we will contact you promptly to arrange a visit at the earliest appropriate time.
What if my pet is a large dog or has trouble moving?
In-home euthanasia is especially helpful for large dogs and pets with limited mobility, since there is no need to lift or transport them. We come to you and care for your pet right where they are resting.
Do I need my regular veterinarian’s records?
Records are helpful but not required. Sharing your pet’s medical history allows Dr. Buchanan to understand their condition and plan the gentlest possible sedation.
Do you provide quality-of-life consultations without euthanasia?
Yes. If you are unsure whether it is time, a quality-of-life consultation can help you understand your pet’s condition, comfort level, and options so you can make an informed decision.
What support is available after my pet passes?
Grief after losing a pet is real and deeply personal. Our pet loss grief resources page includes support groups, hotlines, and books, and you can honor your companion on our pet memorials page.
Do you offer an online pharmacy?
Yes. Our online pharmacy makes it easy to order pet medications, prescription diets, preventives, and supplements with convenient home delivery.
